Watch the Christmas 2019 TV Ads Here - With My Reviews

Santa claus is sitting in a chair holding a bucket of popcorn and a drink.

I didn't expect to get tagged on a Christmas advert on the 7th Nov in Facebook...to be honest, I never saw myself getting tagged in that sort of post, well EVER? But that's where my good friend Lee really stands out...always innovating! Anyway, he was clearly very amused and impressed with the Argos effort this year and after watching it, I can see why. Fair play Argos and thank you Lee. With that in-mind I thought I'd bring the ads of all the big brands in to a blog and let you feast your festive eyes on these little delights...

So here we go...A-Z with my special snowflake rating for each one! If you disagree please email me at noreply@digity.co.uk, thanks.

Aldi

Verdict: ❆❆❆
Relatively funny but I don't need Robbie Williams back in my head again! 3 snowflakes.

Amazon

Verdict: ❆❆❆
It's a 'nice' effort but is that enough? The Amazon drivers I see can barely look me in the eye as they chuck the parcels my way, let alone burst in to song but hey, it's Christmas so maybe they'll lighten up. 3 snowflakes.

Argos

Verdict: ❆❆❆❆❆
I love it, it inspired me to write a whole blog post on Christmas TV ads and that's saying something! Well played Argos, I thought your days were numbered but after this, well...I may even stick a drum set on my list! 5 snowflakes.

Asda

Verdict: ❆❆❆❆I actually really like this and I didn't expect to. It's a solid Christmas advert in my mind and nice bit of story telling without being overly gimmicky or 'look at our products, look at our products'. 4 snowflakes.

Barbour

Verdict:
I like what they've done but being a disgruntled Barbour customer, I've got to challenge a) the fact the big guy would swap in to a green Barbour jacket (he is however going back to his roots given he originally wore green prior to Coca-Cola tapping him up) and b) any sort of reference it could last 125 years. That aside it's an ok advert...but, well... I can't put that aside. 1 snowflake.

Boots

Verdict: ❆❆
I'm not sure what the brief was but it was probably " make us relevant to everyone and show them so they know " - and therefore is a fantastic job at appealing to, well, no one (that I can relate to at least). Sticking the word Vegan in and hoping for the best isn't the way to go in my mind, it's very bland, just like their stores. 2 snowflakes.

Ikea

Verdict: ❆❆❆
I'm not sure if I like this but it's definitely an ad to drive sales rather than build the brand and get a message out to a specific target audience. It won't get me running there for last minute presents on the 24th Dec but it has it's place. 3 snowflakes.

Iceland

Verdict: ❆❆❆❆
Fair play for signing up a pretty special cast (yes I've got small children so this captured my attention) and for Iceland to do that, fair play. It's not exactly special itself as an ad but they are less about the art and more about the sausage rolls so fair play. 4 snowflakes.

John Lewis

Verdict: ❆❆❆❆
They kept us waiting but in my humble opinion it was worth it. I like the fact this is just a story with a feel good factor, they haven't sold out, they've stood out and got people talking. Timing is everything as long as the impact is strong and they've nailed it by the look of my social feeds this morning. Now Christmas can begin. 4 snowflakes.

Lidl

Verdict: ❆❆❆
"More for everyone this Christmas" is the line and it left me wanting a bit more but then I remembered it's an advert! Fairly engaging, relatively watchable but this will be more about the air time they buy than anything with this sort of creative. 3 snowflakes.

M&S

Verdict: ❆❆❆❆
M&S are trying to engage a younger audience...can you tell ;) Pretty energised advert for Christmas time and for M&S it's feeling very fresh! Good job. 4 snowflakes.

M&S Food

Verdict: ❆❆❆❆
Before I pressed play I said to myself "the only thing I care about here is whether it makes me hungry." Well it definitely did, not sure on the casting of the main couple and dialogue but very good effort. 4 snowflakes.

TK Maxx

Verdict: ❆❆❆❆
This advert is a bit bonkers but what I'd regard as a solid Christmas ad and decent message to inspire. Well played. 4 snowflakes.

Visa

Verdict: ❆❆
I like the idea, I like the footage, I love the song it's based on, I don't like the ad. Go figure? Something about randoms murdering a song you genuinely like in the name of making interest payments on stuff people can't afford, just didn't click for me. It won't bother me though if it comes on BUT it won't make me feel good about Visa so it's failed. 2 snowflakes.

Walkers Crisps

Verdict: ❆❆❆❆
Well done Walkers for this effort - you went big, you've done well with everything from a relevant star and tune through to a comedy ending. Fair play, a well shot and very crisp effort. 4 snowflakes.

So that concludes this review of the 2019 Christmas TV adverts. If you got this far down the page to read this, I salute you. It was hard enough writing it let alone reading it ;)

Merry Christmas everyone.
