2020 has sadly been an extremely tough year for many businesses. If your business has been one of the fortunate ones to survive so far, you are certainly doing something right. But, with the country having just exited a second nationwide lockdown and entered into a localised tiered lockdown, building a robust and engaging online presence is more important than ever. Websites, social media, online advertising techniques, email campaigns; there are a lot of routes you can take, and which areas you decide to focus the most on will depend on your business and your goals. However, as a general rule, the following three tips are key things to consider to help your business survive periods of lockdown:

1. Create or enhance your website

For those of you in retail - if you don’t already have a website, you can create your very own online store effectively and quickly using any of the variety of eCommerce platforms available. We’ve seen Christmas markets moving online and restaurants selling key ingredients for customers to make their food at home, all through newly-created eCommerce functionalities; even outside of retail, an eCommerce site can be extremely beneficial.

Alternatively, if you already have a website, you may need to give it a refresh in order to communicate with your customers more effectively. Regularly refreshing the content of your website helps you to improve your Google ranking and can reduce your bounce rate, while refreshing the visuals is great for improving user interaction and ensuring your site continues to reflect your brand.

2. Contact all your existing customers.

Shout about your progress! Let your customers know via
email about your new website, its features and how they can benefit from it. Give them an update on any offers or promotions. Provide an overview of your year, focusing on any highlights. Everyone likes to read news about positive growth and change - now, more so than ever - so don’t be afraid to blow your own trumpet! If you have an email database, you could really benefit from sending regular informative updates to your customers.

3. Develop your social media to attract new customers and communicate to existing customers

People are using
social media now more than ever, with the estimated 3.08 billion people now on social media set to grow to up to 3.43 billion by 2023*, so don’t underestimate its power. You need to engage with your customers and potential customers by posting regularly about any new developments and offers and creating a content strategy which is engaging, visual and helps you to represent your brand effectively to your consumers. There are a vast number of ways to engage with customers both organically and through paid ads on social media, with different platforms and techniques being more impactful for your business depending on your sector and target audience.
